UC Merced Medical Education Building
A climate-responsive landscape that supports student life, wellness, and the future of medical education in the Central Valley. The new UC Merced Medical Education Building offers a unique opportunity to shape a landscape that celebrates the Central Valley’s distinct ecological character while addressing urgent climate challenges. Shade, seating, water stewardship, and support for student life were central to the design approach. As the first building for UC Merced’s new medical school, the landscape establishes a strong foundational framework for future development. A central Garden Walk promenade serves as the primary circulation spine and, together with the Hedgerow Walk, frames a generous open space quad. This quad is anchored by a garden terrace, outdoor classrooms, and tree-lined bosque courtyards. The design integrates natural and built site features to frame views, promote connection, and create a resilient and engaging outdoor campus experience.
