900 Block Art Plaza
Design Inspired by the Life and Work of Ray Eames
The 900 Block Art Plaza is a public space inspired by the pioneering spirit of Ray Eames, a Sacramento native and visionary artist and designer who, alongside her husband Charles, helped shape the trajectory of modern architecture and design. The project aims to honor Ray’s creative legacy while transforming an underutilized urban space into an engaging, inclusive public plaza.
Aligned with the goals of the Envision O Street Concept Plan, the plaza emphasizes interactive art, universal play, and vibrant placemaking. The concept design draws from the abstract playfulness, bold color palettes, and sense of curiosity that define the Eameses’ body of work, while placing special emphasis on Ray’s contributions as a woman in a field historically dominated by men.
Through interpretive design and interactive elements, the 900 Block Art Plaza invites the public to engage with art, celebrate local history, and experience a playful, modernist aesthetic rooted in Sacramento’s creative legacy.
