about the project
The expansion of a City Hall complex included extensive public input and numerous design studies to arrive at a preferred solution. The urban site was developed to reflect the historic nature of the existing City Hall while accommodating current and future needs.
The team designed a new civic plaza, public areas and streetscape located around Sacramento’s historic City Hall and a new administrative building. An extensive public input process was used to solicit ideas from the people who utilize City Hall on a daily basis – this included workshops, open house sessions and public presentations. The design team also worked with a city council ad-hoc committee to work through detailed design decisions. One primary consideration for the design involved the historic use of plant materials adjacent to the original building. Our team researched years of archival photographs, interviewed city staff, and worked with the Historic Preservation Board to arrive at a planting design that bridges the past with the future.
